Doorway Singers Kick Off the Christmas Season with Joy & Vision

The Christmas season has officially begun for the Doorway Singers! Every year, we launch our busiest and most magical time with an Orientation event, and this year’s kickoff in Suffolk was full of music, laughter, and plenty of holiday cheer.
Building The Doorway Sound
The night began with a sound-shaping workshop led by our music director, Sarah Schweit. New members were introduced to the foundations of vocal musicianship: blending, overtones, vocal health, and the signature style we call The Doorway Sound. It was inspiring to hear fresh voices join the ensemble, adding new color to our beloved harmonies.
Reuniting the Doorway Family
Not long after, veteran singers began to arrive, each greeted by an enthusiastic “AYYYYY!” at the door. For some, it had been over a year since we last gathered in person, so the night was filled with joy as we reconnected over new milestones: babies, jobs, degrees, and fresh leadership roles.
New Leadership for a New Season
This year was also an election year. Every two years, the Doorway Singers hold elections for our board, which includes roles such as business manager, music director, marketing director, treasurer, secretary, choreographer, costumer, and technology officer.
We’re excited to welcome four newly elected officers starting their term this January:
- Marisa Eagle – Treasurer
- Robert Walters – Marketing Director
- Robert Cadwallader – Costumer
- Tara Pandiscia – Choreographer
Before the kickoff, the officer team gathered for a planning retreat to ensure each department is aligned and ready to lead the group into another unforgettable season.
Breaking Bread, Looking Ahead
Like every Doorway gathering, the potluck was a highlight. A spread of savory dishes and sweet treats that gave us the perfect chance to sit, share stories, and simply enjoy being together again. Between bites, conversation naturally turned toward the season ahead: what audiences can expect, how we’ll continue to grow, and the excitement of making music together.
A Season to Remember
If the brief preview of singing we heard tonight is any indication, Hampton Roads is in for a musical treat. With an incredible mix of veteran and new talent, guided by strong leadership, the Doorway Singers are ready to spread joy through every note this holiday season.
